It is no secret that I have had a longstanding love affair with books. I am constantly reading reviews, adding new novels to my wishlist and jubilantly downloading them conveniently to my Nook usually three or four at a time.

Have you ever read a book or watched a television show/movie where a dish described or shown looks so incredible you can think of nothing else?

This has been the case for me in the last week. First it was donuts, now chicken marsala (which slowly morphed into The Cheesecake Factories "Chicken Madeira"). All three sins were spurred on by Jennifer Cruise's "Bet Me." Remember when I talked about clean eating and discipline? Here blogs the biggest hypocrite of all having eaten three donuts in the past two days.

I hate when a certain food is on my brain because I can assure you it will not leave until it has been consumed by my big mouth. My small waistline in comparison to the large quantity of food which I eat on a daily basis never ceases to puzzle friends and coworkers.

Back on the wagon tomorrow perhaps. The worst thing one could do in regards to food is take it all too seriously.

Current Obsessions

1. My Errand app on my iPad. I love that I can categorize each task (into different folders such as self-improvement, work, to buy etc) and then check it off when completed. There is also a logbook that shows you to date, how many tasks you have completed and how many that day. This appeals to my type-A personality that likes to have visual proof that progression is occurring.

2. My significant other and I abhor having chapped lips. So we try every high-end to drugstore balm created, in search of finding our favorites. Kiehl's original in the tube is clearly the one for me and in his bag of presents (not during Christmas, a bag of "just because" presents) I picked up the men's version or "facial fuel" for him. I like that this balm has a hint of peppermint in it (of course I tried it) and lacks the stickiness and fuss of others.

3. Mario Badescu's Enzyme Cleansing Gel. I use this pretty much once a day and it keeps my skin so clear, clean and exfoliated without the tightness that occurs when you've stripped your skin of too much moisture. Because of the gentle exfoliation, my cream and tinted moisturizer go on much smoother.

4. Lush's 25:43 limited edition fragrance. This. Is. Incredible. Released solely for Valentine's Day, it is everything I like in a fragrance. Fresh, light and feminine, named 25:43 because it took creator Mark Constantine 25 minutes and 43 seconds to create.

5. Erno Laszlo's: Velvet Night Cream & Morning Beauty Rescue It actually took me a while to find a photo because I do not have the cream with me and I believed the maker to be Enzo instead of Erno. I use the night cream for both night and day right now because the winter dryness and frigidity is so harsh to my skin. I love the Morning Beauty Rescue (it is a translucent gelee with light reflecting particles in it) especially for days when my skin actually does look a little tired. I mix it with foundation and a bit of moisturizer and instantly my skin glows as if I did get eight hours of sleep and was not too tired to take my makeup off last night.

What Grinds My Gears

This is only a part of an always growing list of things that make me want to slap someone in the face, scream in exasperation or just ask quite directly (and loudly may I add) "What possessed you to believe this would be a good idea!?"

1. People that bring fish or something else similarly odorous for lunch at work when everyone works in an open space (it is a complete different story if they keep those aromas far away or have an office which keeps the fumes contained).

2. Employees that complain about how busy they are or how much as been added to their plate. Said employee then passes off mundane tasks to others or declines when asked to help with a project. A few minutes later, steal a glace at the screen of overworked employee and you'll see him/her scrolling their blog roll of fashion and foodie sites or even worse, playing a game. Wut.

3. People with no table manners. You've been there. You go out to lunch or dinner with a few friends and one person you've never dined with before. This person licks their fingers so furiously you feel like offering up the napkin in your very own lap just to get them to cease this disgusting display. What barn were you raised in!? I literally went to lunch at Moe's once and this girl sat there licking her thumb and index finger over and over again (inserting them both into her mouth from time to time for a good suck). What. The. Hail!?

4. Men that stare at you while you are in a public area for whatever reason. They may not be thinking of picking you up, they may be admiring the cut of your oxford for all we know, however there is a length of time which is appropriate to look at someone. And too many people are guilty of going far beyond that allotted time.

5. People that come to my city and complain about it. No one in Boston can drive, the nightlife is bland, the weather is too unpredictable etc. You're the only one looking like an idiot because you failed to research the place you uprooted your entire life for. If you don't like it I would be happy to direct you to a lovely place by the name of Logan Airport.

6. That said, I hate bad drivers. This actually should have been first on my list because I don't think a day goes by that I am not rolling my window down in preparation to throw up a middle finger. If I notice the license plate is not a Massachusetts one, I also add a "Welcome to Boston (insert expletive here)." Yes, we're harsh, please get used to driving over 15 miles per hour. If you don't like it, go back to your rainy, cow laden, waves of grain or wherever you may have come from.

I have to say, my absence from writing is one I will never allow again. The activity is far too cathartic for me and being without one of my few creative outlets has hindered my love of saying whatever the heck comes to mind and not giving a damn about what anyone thinks about it. It's good to be back.

Best Kept Secret: George Guest Edition

I'm all about supporting one of my own which is why when I found out a few guys from my high school were the founders of the high-end leather line George Guest (click the name to view their page) I immediately wanted to take a look at what they had to offer. I was not disappointed.

I love their down to basics concept of focusing solely on quality and the double-wrap bracelet with navy blue stitching will be purchased for my husband-to-be's next surprise goodie bag.In fact I wish I'd seen the above pictured before I purchased the Cartier one, P would have preferred this more masculine version.

I can see George Guest doing a wonderfully simple dog collar and will add the black Hillside to our collection for day hikes and the like. Take a look at their stuff, I cannot wait for them to add more to their selection but like any thing of quality, their pieces are actually worth waiting for.

Resolutions, Food Porn et al

I read an article on Stylecaster hypothesizing whether or not Food Porn is the new..well, porn. I agree completely, it is an affinity i have developed for over a year on my tumblr and pinterest (that I have recently for your viewing pleasure included on my page). A guilty pleasure you can indulge in while in public though one you should not participate in while attempting to diet or hungry.

What is the deal with New Year's Resolutions? Why do we kid ourselves? I've been reading peoples proclamations and even experiences, one girl with her juice cleanse, another a male committed to making 2012 "swagtastic."

Girlfriend, once the cleanse is over, if you don't stick to somewhat clean eating, the pounds are going to come right back. Homeboy, I hope you have a good job because swag does not pay the bills.

January is not the time we should focus on renewing ourselves. This should be a continual process each day, striving for better, to do & give more, to be better people, live fuller, healthier lives. Why do people kid themselves and go to the gym those 3 times only to let the membership expire a year later, their physique remaining the same the only thing changed is money gone down the drain?

In the past year I have lost 10 pounds somewhat slowly. There is only one way to lose weight and keep it off. Eat well and exercise. That's all folks. So why do people insist on these crazy diets, which may show some results, however they are saddened and surprised when their weight balloons again when they begin eating solid foods again. I don't understand, it all seems like common sense.

Have you ever been in a position where you feel you've attained a great deal of things you once longed for, that you thought could only enhance your life? And they do, however the luster slowly tarnishes and you're left questioning why you fooled yourself thinking a material object would provide you with a lasting happiness.

For most wealthy citizens that experience this, it is then the time to turn to enlightening and wandering down some spiritual path. That must be the key to happiness (in their opinion). Life shouldn't be about resolving to make this the year, but finding a balance each and every day of those elements that drive us all and provide us happiness. Can we make 2011 the last year we kept uselessly fooling ourselves? Or realistically, make a solid attempt.

Its been forever since I updated! Life has been insane and unpredictable and so many changes have occurred in such a brief period of time.

I have moved, changed jobs and released a great deal of toxicity from my life (for good) that had been long overdue. There is never a reason to judge someone, however their actions or inactions do say a lot about their character. I spent time with a group of girls and one in particular was incredibly nasty and a known bully however I attempted to give her the benefit of the doubt (until she proved me wrong). She did. Not only that, but those few weeks I spent with her, I was horrified how she treated and spoke to and about others. After banishing her from my company, I looked at the other group of girls and wondered what it said about them for spending so much time with her so willingly.

No bother, it is no longer any of my concern and I've learned that people usually do not surprise you (at least not in a good way). After making some of the previously mentioned changes, it was no surprise to hear that said girls were now spewing my name endlessly in a less than complimentary way.

On to important things. I have maintained friendships with some wonderful people I have since had to leave behind after my big move and my new job excites me immensely (as does my new, generous salary!) I thought I had it good before, if I'd only knew. I still spend time with the good eggs I had to leave behind, two of which will most definitely be in attendance at my wedding.

My significant other has been spoiling me relentlessly after some of the things I've gone through and I can't say I mind. Much of my recent purchases have been extra soft over-sized sweaters, some acquired from Zara's immense sale (one is a gorgeous green with tan leather elbow patches that looks perfect paired with my brown riding boots). I have been living in these sweaters and soft lounge pants during my break from work (somewhat, I have done some contract work) but it has been a joy to wake up without a start having to scroll through my Blackberry to see what has been piled on my plate during my slumber.

A lot that has happened has also made me realize how fortunate I am to have a man in my life. Not a boy or guy, not a frat boy hanging onto his school years bouncing a ping pong ball into a plastic cup, not a guy taking endless streams of classes to forgo growing up and not some grungy boy pursuing some fruitless dream in a talentless garage band. I have a self-less man that knew what he wanted (one of those things being me) and went after it with all that he had. He is clearly the best person I know and not a day goes by that I do not remind myself how fortunate I am for the things his mere presence has taught me. Not only that, but I have never felt more confident and secure with who I am and that has enabled me to do a lot of things I never imagined myself capable.

Status Update

A lot can happen in one week, really.

I put myself on a spending diet. Sunday I went grocery shopping (beforehand having planned meals and organized my list by department to cut down on the time I had to spend in Whole Foods) and made all of my meals this week except for two. I only spent money three times, one being for groceries. This is a big deal for me as I almost never take the time to prepare my meals (preferring to spend any extra time I have in the morning working out) or curtail my spending. Its amazing how empowering it makes you feel.

I have been using the Harvard Business dropout founded website LearnVest to extend my financial knowledge through "boot camps" geared towards saving, cutting costs, "priceless style",creating a detailed budget and list of expenditures, living more frugally in all aspects and building your career. There are dozens of other bootcamps but you can customize which ones you subscribe to, to fit your life (there's even one for expectant mothers). I love the site and best of all, it's free!

I also have a new-found love of Florence & the Machine. Her new song "Shake it Off" is a favorite in one of many new additions to my playlist including:

I've also been making a concerted effort to separate my work and personal life. Minute details are huge for me and I am without a doubt a creature of habit. At work I use the same pen, highlighter and post-it hue. Changing something as small as using a different type of pen at home, listening to music almost consistently (I refrain while my boss is in the office so I can hear if he needs me) and even attempting to take away some of the structure of my Saturday and Sunday is already having a profound affect on my well-being.

Every morning I arrive early to the office and do whatever tasks necessary to "wake up" the office and then I prepare a long list of things I need and want to accomplish that day. I then highlight the most important tasks that must be finished to help me prioritize. There is a completely separate list just for things that need to be brought to my bosses attention or action items for easy access when he calls on me. This structure has led me to great success but I tend to let it also dictate my weekends (especially my lists). It takes a lot of effort to let loose.

Another thing I have noticed, as more and more friends and coworkers have begun reading my blog, the more inquiries I receive to edit or look over some of their writing. This past week in fact I've had three inquiries which is incredibly flattering. This is something I love to do and therefore not a problem at all except I do not have a great deal of time to do it all (outside of my valuable weekends).

Lastly, the best thing of all to take place this year? Something I have been looking forward to for two years has finally taken seed and is in the process of completion. I love the song "All I Want for Christmas is You" as much as the next person and during the few holiday seasons I spent as a single girl, I would sing it wondering if the season would in fact be more bearable with a boyfriend. This year, I have truly gotten the one thing that means the most to me and I take time to enjoy the thought of it each and every day.

The circumstances of a certain happiness we are suddenly able to enjoy may not always occur due to the happiest of faculties. That is true in this situation. Someone gave up something so significant to give us this happiness and even though it is something so heartbreaking, I celebrate that person's gift and will forever. It can be easy to focus on some of the overbearingly sad aspects of our lives, we all have them, but more and more I think about how fortunate I am for each small thing. It is what keeps me going when I'm doing it, solely and sometimes sadly, on my own.

What Would You Wear: Corporate Appropriate Work Wardrobe

I am always searching for ways to bring life to my otherwise bland wardrobe of business attire. Whether it's learning from Mai Tai how to tie my Hermes scarf 1000 different ways or my new favorite, 9to5Chic's blog is a wonderment of possibilities. Most looks on lookbook are far too out there to pull off in my office even as daring as I sometimes may be.

The owner of 9to5Chic is by far the best to view for work outfit inspiration, I don't usually covet others wardrobes, but her's is so vast, elegant and artfully put together I cannot help but feel a twinge of innocent envy.

Vanity Blogs

I've never been a blogger that snaps photos of her outfits each day, legs crossed with hand on hip in the most flattering angle and makeup caked on to create false beauty (or some fancy photoshop work). Most of those girls do have a lot of traffic, more photos than words.

The shroud of anonymity is something I embrace, but I do sometimes think about posting an outfit here or there. I do feel like my blog will be evolving as I take on a wedding, honeymoon, decorating our new place, traveling and everything else that comes along with being the other half of a married couple.

Winter white/cream/gold (one of my favorite combinations) necessities.

My skin is so dry I've vowed to take my Omega-3 pills, slather on the thickest Kiehls I can find and deep condition my hair at least once a week.

Last year my Starbucks favorite was the Creme Brulee latte. I've yet to have one. Though that may have something to do with my "saving" and brewing my soy capps at home with a Starbucks and Godiva hybrid.

I need to be sure I enjoy every gift the winter season has to offer, before it's gone.

Life has gotten crazy as LV-Day approaches (the day I pack and ship everything off to Las Vegas for the week of events, awards shows, luncheons and parties I'll be working). The most I've managed technologically-wise is the occasional quirky tweet.

I have no complaints, just excitement. It seems that my life is going to be changing a great deal in the next six months and all I can do is sit back and rub my hands together with glee.

My gift lists are complete, I have something for everyone except my significant other. Though it won't take too much pondering to think of at least three meaningful and inexpensive things (he hates when I spend a lot of money on him).

Today is day two of eating no meat. I can't say I'm moving onto a completely vegetarian lifestyle but I am committing myself to an even healthier existence. I feel better already. I even began cooking nightly (okay two nights in a row is barely "nightly" but this is major progress for me). Tonight I made "General Tsao's Tofu." It was delicious!

I get a lot of happiness from seeing others succeed and find their own happiness, whether it involves them realizing how good it feels to donate, do something nice or excel in the particular field of their choice. During my philosophy studies, one scholar argued that doing good deeds could be a somewhat selfish act because of the good feelings a person experiences, or even seeks from their action.

As a part of my little plan to make the world a better place, I want to begin a health and exercise program/contest at work. I did a little research and learned this is something that was previously done, but I want to do it in a manner that inspires people to evolve into healthier beings rather than maintain a diet for the duration of the contest, only to go back their prior bad habits.

I guess this all may need to begin after the holiday party judging from the menu I've selected (based on everyone's preferences). That's all for tonight, I want to thank "K" for prompting me to update. It always gives me the nicest feeling when someone tells me they enjoy my writing or request another post.

What Would You Wear: Office Holiday Party Edition

Those of you existing in a corporate environment may be aware that office holiday party season is almost upon us. I certainly am, because I will be the one planning said shindig.

Being always somewhat dressed at work, I love nothing more than being casual and comfortable during my time outside of the office. One of my coworkers commented that I "always look put together," and my boss has also said something along the same lines much to my satisfaction.

Depending on the venue, restaurant, rented event room or something more fun like an activity space such as a bowling alley, there are definite rules regarding your attire and conduct.

1. Most cardinal, do not drink too much. Nothing is worse than seeing coworkers do or say something inappropriate, only to slink into the office on Monday with the most embarrassed expression on their faces imaginable.

This is one of the main reasons I've stayed away from most social gatherings with coworkers involving alcohol. Any faux pas made are talked about the day after and truly, no one wins. I am also no longer okay with being hung over the next day, it doesn't correlate with my productive mindset.

I read somewhere: "I used to be quite the late-night party girl. [Then] I started taking myself seriously. I didn't overindulge in alcohol. I didn't feel like wasting my time... I would rather be productive. These people who are always [going] out are the people not really doing anything." This describes my current mentality to a t. Though I find nothing wrong with going out here and there, I am merely no longer a person that feels compelled to do so every weekend. And I'm okay with that.

2. When in doubt, dress conservatively. You can be fashionably creative without flashing your hoo-hah. Mirroring your otherwise office-chic style is a sure way to avoid being spoken about for the wrong reasons.

I love a festive party dress and many of the pieces that have caught my eye from the UK born TopShop, fit into that category without leaning too much on the "party" side:

A festive skirt paired with opaque tights is another way to go as long as you keep your top somewhat plain to avoid going overboard. My personal favorite, are winter shorts, tights and sky high heels. The outfit makes an always appropriate statement and allows me to enjoy a bit of freedom in my otherwise layered winter wardrobe.

I already have two perfect pairs, one: silky and belted, falling lower mid-thigh, the other sequined and a bit shorter. Neither are the below pictured pair, but ones that held some appeal:

Staying away from see-through materials, too-short hemlines, or frankly, anything leather (besides your shoes) is imperative. Don't forget your accessories! A statement necklace, ladylike heels and classic clutch can go a long way in helping you assert your personal style. Let me know via my aristobrat email, how things go.

What Would You Wear: Thanksgiving Edition

Thanksgiving is right around the corner and whether you will be visiting family, friends or either of the two of your significant others, you've most likely thought about what you'll wear and the above pictured was not what came to mind.

When I think about appropriate outfits I am brought back to Serena's last Thanksgiving outfit on Gossip Girl (yes I went there), the color palette is a little too on target (i.e. trying a bit too hard) but I still like it:

Seeing as the temperature is consistently remaining in the 30s, it seems a sweater would be most prudent. If you feel like being uber on trend, then you may as well go with a sweater dress. Er on the conservative side if meeting the parents obviously, my favorite for this is a tailored dress with a modest hemline paired with a cardigan of sweet-hue. Hey, I have to look innocent somehow.

I'll be spending the holiday with friends along with a group of people I do not yet know. I love being thrown into situations where I know almost no one, later to leave the gathering with a dozen new friends calling out "Let's get together soon!"

I most likely will not be wearing brown (I wear tan, but only on the bottom half of my body) but a gorgeous deep orange suits my coloring like this Michael Kors wool-blend shift:

If I were spending time with family, I'd keep it a bit more comfy casual, perhaps a Vince top and slim cut trousers (not too slim, I have a healthy appetite and need room to breathe!) Cute heels that are wearable for more than a few hours are a must, I prefer comfort most of the time unless I really decide to dress up.

Weekend

This weekend happened to be a pretty perfect one and today is a gorgeous, flawless fall day.

I spent Saturday indulging in hours of reading & writing. Literally, all day. That's heaven for me. I got through a book and a half and did some writing that was without a doubt therapeutic. I received an unexpected phone call from my friend Andrene, we spent close to an hour talking about our lives, goals and all the things we've gone through. We have somewhat similar situations and she is incredibly encouraging. I am incredibly fortunate to have her in my life. At the conclusion of our call we made plans for Friday that made me realize I have been making more of a conscious effort to be social.

Today I woke up and cup of coffee in hand, scoured news, blogs and tidbits from Facebook that had some relevance to my life. Then I worked out before heading to brunch with a fairly new friend Katrina. Brunch was delicious and it was wonderful to spend time with someone with a bubbly zest for life and hard-work conquers all mentality. After we did some shopping and then she introduced me to a fantastic hole-in-the wall tacqueria somewhat close to my house I never knew existed. I love the things new friends can bring into your life.

Speaking of new developments, at work I organized a food drive for a local food pantry that is currently low in addition to a toy drive for GiftstoGive. I always have a nagging feeling that I'm not doing enough with the gifts I've been given. My father always taught me that when you get to a place in life where you have more than you need, it is essential to spread that wealth with others less fortunate. If you don't have a lot, then volunteering your time is just as good. My boyfriend reminds me that I get too upset about many of the horrible injustices of the world.

I spoke with the CEO of GifttoGive on Friday and we talked about the location I'd be sending everything off to in relation to where our home office was. He let me know that the kids most effected by the non-profits generosity would not be the ones in our area. It made me sad he felt he had to mention this. People only want to help their own? I told him "a needy child is a needy child." That kind of ended that tangent.

Tomorrow is Monday. Do you know what that means? Pumpkin muffin time! Post early am workout that is of course. Hanukkah is about a month away and Christmas not far behind. Where did fall go? Driving today through the red, orange and yellow foliage only enhanced my good mood. I hate driving in snow but I'll never complain about our good fortune in being able to experience all four seasons. Never. I've been researching the perfect holiday gift for my boss, nothing over the top, just something meaningful to let him know he is appreciated.

I know I seem to always acquire something new here and there but this weeks shopping was for my parents who experienced unfortunate circumstances recently. I Fedexed over boxes of things that would brighten up their day during this particularly stressful time and sent pretty flowers.

I have lots of projects in the works that will be rewarding for me and a few others that will greatly affect those that have touched my life the most. 10 days until D-day. Currently: loving Rihanna's "You the One" and still "What Makes You Beautiful" by One Direction that I posted a few weeks ago. It seems America is going through a One Direction craze. Have a great week.

Revelations

I always told myself that the day I look at a child and want one, would be a scary scary day. I think that day is close, and it scares the pants off me. Last weekend I saw the cutest young boy helping out his mother, bringing their food to and from the counter to their chosen table. When they'd finally finished he cutely selected the part of the meal he preferred to begin with and took a bite with gusto. He was so sweet tears actually came to my eyes. It happened again the next day with another little one. This is scary stuff!

Second revelation: I really like Coke Zero, does that have sugar in it?

I started this entry last week based on the random things that pop into my head. Sometimes after a more profound thought, I "re-think" it in the manner which I would write it. Does anyone else do that? Its a bit hard to explain but when I think about something particularly interesting, I think about how I'd write about it, almost unconsciously.

One weekend when I was riding my bike to the library to do some heavy researching/writing, I happened to come to an intersection where a state cop had dutifully stopped at the red light. At seeing me he hopped out of his car, stopped all other traffic, to let me cross the incredibly busy intersection (they do have one of those buttons to allow pedestrians brief walking periods). When I was almost to the other side, he looked at me a smiled. What!? Did someone literally stop traffic for me?

Last weekend I had the idea to be spontaneous, park my car at nearby Riverside to take the train into the city to wander. I should have prefaced this paragraph with the too true statement that I am not a spontaneous person. My fun is scheduled in perfect increments, I feel happiest when I'm being productive and a lack of planning is not conducive to me being in a calm state.

Yesterday I went by my favorite new locally owned coffee place (I'm somewhat boycotting Starbucks because I love supporting Mom and Pop places) and indulged in a pumpkin muffin. I nearly cried it was so good. It was the first thing that popped into my mind today. This small shop is lovely because the people that work there are always so sweet and one of my favorite small touches? Cover toppers. They have one for every occasion. Yesterday, appropriately, my cup sported an American flag. Its really the small things that get me.

I'm off, for another pumpkin muffin.

Office Politico

Being a young twenty-something in corporate America has been quite an eye-opening experience. As I mentioned during some of my posts this past summer, I spent a great deal of time in preparation of this transition reading business books, business etiquette books, self-help books (aimed at those wishing to be more productive and positive, among other desirable traits) and other resources like Harvard Business Review’s daily articles cramming before this ultimate test.

For once in my life I was actually adequately prepared. I knew what needed to be done before it was asked. I also knew that when the ball was dropped, excuses were not acceptable. Taking responsibility, instead, would gain me respect much faster than pushing the blame onto someone else. Much of the time the blame may have belonged to someone else, but office politics, though tricky, are something everyone needs to participate in somewhat.

I love the challenges thrown my way day in and day out. Completing daunting projects by myself makes me feel more joy than I ever thought possible. In fact that euphoria deters me from asking for help more often now (in the right situations). I feel fortunate to have this chance to grow, learn from the highly-educated and flourish slowly but surely into someone I can be proud of.

Pleasantly Preoccupied

I can't believe Starbucks red cups arrived and I didn't even notice. As I dashed into the cafe equal distance between work and home, I ordered my latte with haste and exited just as quickly as I came. It wasn't until an hour later as I was throwing away the dredges that I noticed that the cheery holiday cups had been released. A bit sad for someone who looks forward to pumpkin spice season and red cup season all year.

What this made me realize however, is how much I have been focusing solely on work and very little else. I don't mind necessarily, because my boss is so appreciative and has been in a constant good mood. And I've never been someone to do just what is expected of me. I truly could use a bit more fun I suppose.

My creative outlet is usually writing and reading brings me relaxation. My workouts and healthy(ish) diet - I've fallen a bit off the wagon, keep me physically sustained. As far as spiritually, I've thought about returning to Sunday mass, or even Saturday night. It's something I miss, the positive message, no matter how archaic some may see it, I see many of the messages pertaining to hope and faith - two vital components of my daily life.

After a near 4 year hiatus, my fingers have begun to itch to play the piano again. I studied for over 11 years privately in addition to 8 years of violin and a few of voice. There's a new piano boutique that opened almost directly across from one of the shops I was in last weekend and I longed to stop in and play a little, but my shyness stopped me. What if the salesperson scolded me and told me it was not allowed, thinking I certainly did not look like someone who could afford to purchase a piano (though I owned a gorgeous one most of my life)? Who knows, I was gutless and didn't find out, but I'll find another way to fulfill this musically inclined urge.

I've been incredibly fortunate to have my significant other around for almost the entire week. That never happens with his travel schedule. An admission made on my part has brought us closer than ever, something I never thought possible.

I have a few other things I've begun writing throughout the week that I'll post later as I have no time to at the moment. Have a wonderful weekend. Mine will be filled with sweater & jacket hunting, great food, writing/studying, a bit of work tomorrow (I don't mind), a mani/pedi & blowout at least (my nails look raggedy after the office re-organization I orchestrated) and who knows what else.

Sunday Update

So winter has begun and amidst the complaints and surge of surly photos uploaded to Facebook of the snow, I can’t help but feel smug, and perhaps a bit annoyed.

It’s as if people are pretending they’ve been duped by the weather and were unaware of the climate when they moved here.

Newsflash: 1. Homegirl wasn’t born yesterday and 2. I’m well aware that us Massholes are incredibly spoiled with very little to complain about (hence why the weather is the thing people whine about the most). It is becoming a source of irritation more and more so each winter.

When I awoke this morning, it was not a surprise that the power was out. After spending much of the night hearing loud cracks and whipping winds, I expected as much. I definitely miss the days of merely moving my car early enough before the men came to plow our driveway and just having to clear off my car before setting off from my parents’ ranch-style house. Living on my own means though we have a snow blower, much cleanup in addition to clearing the walkways (which we have 3 of) has to be done. No mind.

After completing that somewhat daunting task (and clearing dozens of cumbersome branches off the driveway and lawn), I headed to my local Starbucks where I was unable to get a parking spot in the lot, thus the nearby post office across the street sufficed. As expected, moans and groans from uber-wealthy suburbanites were all one could hear during my 25 minute wait for a quad venti soy cinnamon dolce. Not used to the caffeine withdrawal (I say that seriously, I usually have my one cup at 6am), my head was pounding by the time I took that first sip at nearly noon. I appreciate my little Keurig so much more now.

One thing I have recently noticed is the influx of horrible service I’ve been receiving. Not only was I ignored at a nail salon about a week ago upon entering, given the snarkiest inquiry of “You know it’s like 6 times the price to buy just a cup right?” at Teavana when I went in to get a cup of Jasmine Rooibus and hung up on by a Fedex sales representative from the NY Office. However, it was an incident at Moe’s that had me wondering if this holiday season was going to be one lacking all notion of cheer and if it be a smarter decision to do all of my gift shopping online.

The nail salon was one I do not frequent so it wasn’t as if I expected the warm welcome I receive when I enter my usual spa. However, being the germaphobe I am, the situation at Moe’s seemed downright deplorable. After ordering my usual tofu rice bowl, I was waiting for the man ahead of me to finish paying and eyed the bag of chips resting on the counter that was to be mine. To begin with, some of the chips were coming out of the bag and resting on the less than spotless counter. Secondly, when the cashier had finished with the customer ahead of me and handed him his change, she used those very same hands to shove the chips from the disgusting counter into the bag that was to be for yours truly. I looked at her for a moment wondering if she was for real. Indeed she was because she sharply informed me of the price of my meal. I asked if she didn’t mind getting me another bag of chips that she hadn’t touched with her hands (after handling money) because I have an immune deficiency and get sick quite easily. Her mouth opened in disbelief and she replied “I cannot get the chips without touching them with my hands!” I refused to be the pushover I usually am and asked her about that nifty shovel-like tool I’ve seen other employees use. With exaggerated slowness and huge puffs of air emitting exasperated sighs, she used the scoop I previously mentioned all the while maintaining a put upon expression as if she couldn’t believe I was being so high maintenance. Maybe I was? Loving Moe’s the extent that I do (especially their perfectly seasoned firm tofu), I can’t say I will never return. In fact I will probably be back next week.

This week’s purchases: an mp3 player to replace the one I’ve let my boyfriend “borrow” and a pair of very Tom Ford-esque readers that give me an intellectually chic look (they are much more on trend than my rickety six year old Gucci frames that have seen much better days). I also purchased a pair of classic black patent leather loafers that are incredibly comfortable during my long work days. I also purchased the remaining duplicate beauty necessities to store at my boyfriend’s place as it is something I’ve been meaning to do for well over a year and had only half finished.

This week I celebrated the birthday of one of my coworkers with a few girls from the office at one of my favorite restaurants and then went for drinks the next night with another. I feel I’ve somewhat discovered a good balance between my social and work life (let me be honest, I could try much harder). I feel I am also cultivating an even larger group of positive people that I can be proud to claim part in their group.

Yesterday I received my weekly blow dry from Cida, one of the most talented stylists I’ve ever met (I’m not sure what it is she uses in my hair to make it so silky yet weightless) and my weekly manicure from Michelle. Examining the dynamics of each appointment makes me wonder why the two are so differing. It may be the ever-present noise of the blow dryer that discourages Cida from indulging in idle chit-chat with me, or perhaps she just feels I prefer silence. During my time with Michelle, all we do is talk about our weekend plans, recent buys, the wonder that is men along with whatever else is on our minds. The dialogue rarely halts.

After spending a few tense hours at a jam-packed Barnes & Noble having my chair kicked repeatedly by a 6 year old eating the most vile smelling meat ever (I was preparing for a work week that is bound to be overwhelming), I decided to come to my town’s library to do some writing (where I am now). Though the power is on, the wireless is not. The nice man across the table from me allowed me to borrow his USB cord so I could charge my blackberry. It is those small acts of kindness that remind me of all I have to be thankful for, and that they are to always be reciprocated. It seems I’ve allowed myself to forget at times.

While I have my hopes sky high, I can also wish that the electricity will have been restored when I return home so I can take a hot shower. Let’s not get crazy now though eh?

I Came to Win

This weekend I bought a leather bracelet with two minuscule charms, a piece of turquoise and an angel wing. They symbolize hope, luck & protection, the Emily Dickinson quote many of you are familiar with was inscribed on the packaging. It is to be a reminder during particularly hard times to have hope and a positive attitude, always. Some days are so hard without my other half, I never knew I was this strong until I was tested with this situation.

I spend long days in the office both to be incredibly productive, but also to keep my mind off his absence. This works well, but I could put more effort forward in creating a better balance.

This weekend I was incredibly productive. I bought a new burnt orange pencil skirt and faux-fur bomber hat, both Vera by Vera Wang. I got my hair done (I love it!) I also tried another recipe last week, just a teriyaki stir-fry, but another foray nonetheless. I also purchased my Halloween costume for the office event on Friday.

Saturday is a party I've been looking forward to for a while now, of course I have no idea what I'll wear but I cannot wait to see the attendants. Last weekend about 15 of us went to the Japanese restaurant in Sudbury Fugaku and it was amazing, a thoroughly good time. I feel fortunate to have met a good group of long standing friends of such high caliber.

I've continued to work out consistently and use the Endomondo app on my blackberry. After inputting my height, weight and a few other necessary details, I track the miles I've run, calories expended and a million other things that pique my interest (eg: I've currently burned of 44 burgers). I then can go online and see my progress, my workouts for the week, month or even year. I've even joined a few challeneges, one I'm currently ranked 900 in the world for. It definitely motivates me to go longer with my workouts, to actually do them when I'd love to slack off to then be able to see my progression. That is actually my October progress above.

I've solved the aforementioned problem of the person that comes over yammering in my ear while I'm clearly trying to write. Ear. Buds. Works like a charm. How oblivious can one be to begin an unwanted conversation with someone that is both intently typing away (very seriously might I add) while also wearing "do not bother me" ear buds? Quite, apparently.

Surprise surprise. I've taken my culinary challenge seriously and have since made soy chocolate mousse (though I've recently read a lot of horrifying reports about soy and will now use rice and almond milk instead) and whole wheat penne in vodka sauce.

Tonight I'll be dining at Fugaku with the friends I mentioned a few entries ago. I am ecstatic to see them again and have a night of great conversation in the best possible company. There's a new hot pot restaurant on Rt. 9 that just opened that my manicurist Michelle was telling me about. Apparently its fairly good (in comparison to her favorites in Allston and China Town). I love trying out new places.

This week I had my nails painted a very subdued "Yes We Can, Pink" - Essie's Breast Cancer awareness hue (I had no idea at the time).

Yesterday as I was driving to a local thrift store to find a few additions to my fall wardrobe, I had the sunroof open and felt so incredibly happy seeing the changing leaves. Fall in the New England has a magical quality that you can't go anywhere else for. Transplants (that's what I call people that move to Massachusetts) are quick to talk about our unpredictable weather or shoddy driving, however when you think about it, that could describe anywhere in the U.S. I wouldn't trade my four seasons for the constant threat of devastating earthquakes/hurricanes, 6 days of solid rain, or humidity so bad that every day would be a bad hair day (or 4 product day for that matter).

I now find my weekends to be such a luxury. Those first waking moments on a Saturday are heaven. Knowing I don't need to throw on my sneakers or turn the switch on the coffee pot right away, but can instead snuggle back into my down and enjoy either more sleep, or whatever else I decide.

I did well in my shopping this week, this haul included: a plaid skirt (since per usual for fall, plaid is so of the moment), a gorgeous over-sized cream colored fisherman's sweater for lounging around the house, a faux rabbit stole that is amazing - one of the best finds in quite some time.

A bronze cropped cape, a blue and pink silk scarf to liven up my somewhat neutral wardrobe, two oxfords, a bright blue cardigan and bronze pointed toe flats that are everything I've been dreaming of and more (comfort first and foremost and chic).

I've been adding even more books to my Nook and am excited at the prospect of all they have to offer me.

I love the ways people tie the ordinary or unexpected to philosophy. I am slowly building my non-academic philosophy library, away from Descartes, Bentham, Kant and Aristotle.

One of my superiors at work told me that part of his weekend included reading his sons paper on Capital Punishment and it instantly reminded me of an angst-ridden piece I wrote for one of my philosophy classes pleading my well researched case. I searched for that paper within my google documents to no avail but know it is on my old laptop (that is in need of a new battery, so much so that it will not turn on now without a replacement). I did stumble upon quite a few other papers and was shocked at how well-written they were. It makes me want to begin writing exercises again (I currently have excellent resources to do so) because reading even a few excerpts of those papers made me realize what I am capable if I am willing to cultivate the talent.

Want List: Strongly Seeking to Acquire

The smallest things make my better half the happiest. Every time he tells me something new he loved as a child, a snack he sometimes craves, I store that bit of information away in my brain to bring out at a later time and surprise him.

Sometimes its the smallest momento I find in a gift shop that bears meaning solely to us, once it was a specially designed lighter, another time perfectly ripe cherry tomatoes (one of his favorite snacks).

That being said, though small things give me a great deal of satisfaction, I cannot claim to be nearly as low-maintenance as him by any means.

Je veux:

A cursive typewriter of course. I've never owned a typewriter but when we move into our home and setup the office, I dream of having one. I already see it on my desk, next to a window where I can write freely and contently hear each word pouring onto the pages.

An Hermes scarf. This small piece of cloth adds such an elegance to any outfit as Mai Tai will tell you if you follow her blog (essential to any woman aspiring for classic style.) This scarf, like many things I favor, maintains its air of quality while being refreshingly devoid of tacky embellishments.

I plan to slip these on our pillows for the first evening we sleep in our new place. I can't wait to see the smile they bring to his face.

The 500 Gucci designed for Fiat. I love these little cars and would love one to be my next. I think I posted this on my wantlist early summer, but it still remains up there. It would be white (I think, though I also adore the black), most definitely the convertible model.

For the cocktail party I'm currently planning and potentially to give as gifts for my other friends that are guilty as charged in being perfect hostesses.

A pair of Louboutin's. Let girls be as self-righteous as they'd like claiming they'd rather have quantity over quality, but any true fashionista knows the importance of investment pieces.

I went to Kohl's last weekend to look at Jennifer Lopez's collection and was pleasantly surprised at the pieces she had to offer. I spotted at least four pieces I would have loved to immediately add to my work wardrobe and fun shiny baubles I could see her wear while rocking on stage. Bravo JLo.

What motivates you? Being both naturally inquisitive and observant along with one of my degrees having been shaped around the concept of why we do the things we do, this is something I question each day.

When I used to tell my significant other the things girls would do to me, he would simply yet wisely inform me of the only two reasons most people do hurtful things. They're insecure or they're jealous. It doesn't get any more basic than that.

With that being said, I am constantly examining what is currently motivating my actions, or even my inaction at times. Do I feel I am working towards my fullest potential, squeezing the most out of each day? Or just passing time with the expectation that things will change if I wait long enough?

Dennis Peer once said: "One measure of leadership is the caliber of people who choose to follow you." In the same respect, I feel the people one surrounds themselves with, speaks volumes about their character.

I have been so incredibly fortunate to have stumbled upon the strongest group of diverse women that I am proud to call my friends, women from all parts of the world. When I am in their company there are no pretenses, catty remarks or attempts to one up the person in the next chair. I see genuine smiles on their faces when something good happens to me, I belong without trying.

Tomorrow is my orientation for BostonCares - a non-profit volunteer organization and I feel more excited for this opportunity than I have been about anything in quite some time. Its time to feel the rush, brush the dangerous (LG), I never feel more satisfied than when I'm being severely challenged.

People often ask me why I endure one thing in particular about my life that is habitual and sometimes unbearably painful. My answer is always the same, "Because there is something greater than myself that makes it worthwhile."

If anyone were to follow in my footsteps, I'd hope to make it an unforgettable journey.

Weekend Warrior

So the Uggs came out yesterday. Instead of being sad, I just accept it as another seasonal transition that can become an excuse to add a few more classic pieces to layer into my wardrobe.

In fact I have added a few things. On a whim I bought a gorgeous silk blouse (white with pale pink polka dots) with a bow detail at the neck. A bit school-marmish, however I err on the side of conservative when it comes to my office dress. I also paired it with a recently purchased cream and heather gray cardigan, new charcoal woolen slacks and a cute pink/gray headband with floral details.

If you feel at a loss on where to find fabulous fall jackets, sweater dresses and accessories, head no further than your nearest Zara. I've found some of the most breathtaking pieces at reasonable prices that I can't wait to own.

I've been seeing these adorable Dumbo commercials recently, and it brings me back to my childhood. I had a 5 foot stuffed Dumbo when I was young. When it was sitting on its haunches I barely reached its midsection. I'm not sure why I received him, nor why I loved it so much but I always equate Dumbo with a gentle giant notion along with the irony of him being known for his over-sized ears while everyone always seems to notice my minute pair.

I've loaded close to 25 cookbooks to my Nook to encourage some culinary inspiration. The majority are vegetarian and vegan cookbooks (I am neither but aspire to be). Last weekend I made an apple pie with a dutch crust and my roommate nearly ate the entire thing. It is incredibly encouraging to see someone enjoy something you made so fully! I'll chronicle some of my attempts here.

After mentioning my procrastination angst, it seems the mere mention was all it took to get me going. I've since become Debbie-Does-It-All. Much of it may have to do with the extra energy I now have as I've been waking at 6am to workout before heading to the office.

I plan to jog there this afternoon, get ahead for next week while there will be no interruptions (hopefully) and then bike back as my pink cruiser has kept a near permanent residence there. I need to retrieve it so I can ride it all weekend!

What Have I Been Up To?

Things have been a bit crazy but I can't say I'm lacking in variety socially.

I spent last weekend apple picking with girls from work (nom apple cider donuts) and brunching with a new-found friend, after which we perused the booths at a local bridal show. The day was so fun we decided we didn't want it to end and nibbled on Italian appetizers while getting a late afternoon drink at Papa Razzi in downtown Wellesley (if there can be considered a downtown Wellesley).

This past weekend was spent celebrating one of my best friends birthdays at a deliciously down-to-earth fete that consisted of great food, endless drinks, dancing and something I do quite badly, bowling. Her lifelong friend brought her the most gorgeous and delectable birthday cake, I can't say I remember what was in it but I do know it rivals my favorite Snow Queen from Rosie's Bakery in Brookline. The following night what had been planned on a two person girls night became a much larger after drinks affair which was nice.

I was accepted as one of Yelp's Elite Reviewers which excites me as I feel it somewhat validates my talent to capture my visit to a venue, whether it be restaurant, spa or boutique as I experienced it almost completely.

My significant other continues to help me grow in a way I never imagined possible. There are a lot of people that question the possibility of marriage, vowing yourself to one person for the rest of your life. I was certainly one of those people, but I never thought I'd encounter someone so poignant, deep, worldly and selfless. I don't expect people to understand what we have or the way I feel about him, in fact most people express a great deal of doubt when I speak of my feelings. I do not allow it to frustrate me (for more than a few minutes) and at the threat of sounding smug, I feel sad that they've never felt what I do, or they too would understand instantly.

I dislike that much of the time the smallest tasks take me the longest to complete. Health insurance enrollment, ordering new contacts, refilling a prescription, retrieving my bike from its post where I left it in the hallway of the building where I work. How can I be so organized and on top of things at work that I allow the most mundane tasks linger unfinished?

I've failed thus far in my beginner culinary foray but this doesn't bother me, I've been devouring book after book, shopping and dipping my foot into new activities like participating in a fantasy football league, more online shopping and finding the perfect, small and thoughtful gifts for P.

Now is the time I'd love to begin planning next summers vacation but I don't want to do so prematurely. More later, happy fall.

Aristobrat in the Kitchen

Several of the girls in my office cook meals weekly if not daily for themselves and their significant others. They're always talking about a new recipe they've tried or bringing in delicious and healthy morsels straight from their ovens.

I kind of look at all of this and equate it to my situation...where my significant other does the cooking (mainly for his safety lol) and I've stopped using the stove altogether. The entire situation seems a bit off. I used to love to cook and bake.

To remedy the situation, I've vowed to begin cooking more consistently and immediately began taking steps to follow through. I've organized a binder of healthy and delicious recipes by appetizer, salad, sandwich, breakfast, lunch/dinner, Tex/Mex, Asian and Dessert sections.

I've also requested a few natural food cookbooks which I plan to learn from and found specific apple recipes (since I will be going apple picking this weekend)!

I'll post here when I try something new, providing the picture quality is fair enough.

Boston Bucket List

Living in one of the most historic and intellectual cities in the United States, I'm sad to say there are so many places I have yet to visit. In an attempt to remedy this, I've resolved to create the Boston Bucket List.

Venture for a walk/run on Castle Island in Southie.

Ascend to the observation deck of the Prudential Tower - it being the 26th tallest building in the U.S.

Go on a brewery tour, whether it be Harpoon on Northern Ave or Samuel Adams.

Visit the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Kenmore.

Have a bite at the oldest restaurant in the U.S. The Union Oyster House.

Along with various restaurants and nightlife hotspots I'll visit along the way, this list makes me realize how much of Boston I already have seen. That makes me happy.

NYFW Spring 2012

If we were paying attention at all last week, we can be sure of four things, black+white, neons, print mixing and some extremely femme pieces that have girly-girls alike more than satisfied with what is to come.

I had so many favorites but if I had to say top five: JMendel, Derek Lam, Tracy Reese, Pink Tartan and DVF.

I'll get to those superstars later but there were others that caught my eye like Vivienne Tam's red and white opener that was breathtaking. A lot of her pieces are so wearable and her mix of prints was spot on.

Monique Lhuiller's use of blue/black, in fact most of her pieces were a color subdued with black, clean ponytails and gorgeous gowns were astounding.

Caroline Herrera had lots of green, white and yellow with a divine blue one shouldered piece that I instantly fell in love with.
